Little Italy Food and Culture Tour in New York City
Locals and visitors alike find that discovering New York City’s historic Little Italy is always a fun filled adventure. This is also true on Ahoy New York Tours and Tasting’s food tour of Little Italy in New York City. For the past three years Ahoy New York Food Tours has been leading visitors and locals alike on walking tours of Little Italy. On our tours we enlighten participants with fun facts, history, culture, and stories about this unique New York City neighborhood.
During our visit we also find it imperative to discover the culture—we engage in the culture through tasting ethnic foods! On our tour we sample items such as authentic homemade mozzarella paired with prosciutto and a world famous cannoli. Along the way we encourage visitors to return to some of the well-known shops in the area to pick up fresh pasta and other Italian specialties.
As we walk through what is considered “Littler” Italy, we bring to life the neighborhood that once was. We learn how the Italians first arrived to NYC, what they did for a living, how they survived daily life as immigrants—and how important food and culture was to their everyday lives. We also make sure to tell our visitors the store of Crazy Joey Gallo and his birthday dinner—on our tour we stop by where he was infamously murdered in the 1970’s. Lastly, one of our favorite stops is The Italian American Museum. Our visitors are intrigued by the museum’s displays and will learn that this museum served as a former bank to the neighborhood and played a pivotal role in the average Italian immigrant’s daily life.
Through food tasting and storytelling one will leave our walking tour knowing where Crazy Joey Gallo was killed, where to find some of the best homemade Italian pastas, and lastly what restaurants to avoid vs. the restaurants that are delicious!
