The Seven Best New Restaurants in Chinatown in 2017
Just take a quick walk around Chinatown and it is easy to see that the dining scene here is quickly changing. There are more dining options than ever before and new and exciting restaurants are opening every month. So with that in mind, here are the seven best new restaurants in Chinatown in 2017.
Lalo – 104 Bayard St
Chef Gerardo Gonzalez brings eye opening Mex-Californian dishes at Lalo at the old Winnie’s bar spot. They have items like vegan chicharrones, cumin lamb barbacoa and squid stuffed with chorizo & hibiscus which you would never expect from a restaurant just outside the heart of Chinatown. Whether you are a vegan or not, there are a lot of exciting options here.
Chinese Tuxedo – 5 Doyers St
Chinese Tuxedo was once an old opera house on one of the most interesting streets in New York City, Doyers St. Since opening, Chinese Tuxedo is quickly redefining fine dining in Chinatown with their fresh modern takes on classic Chinese dishes like char siu (roast pork) and fried rice.
The Good Sort – 5 Doyers St
Next door to Chinese Tuxedo is a very interesting vegan coffee shop and they specialize in wildly innovative rice porridge aka congee dishes. With dishes like their breakfast congee (congee with maple granola, blueberries and poached strawberries), we can definitely say there is no place like it anywhere in New York City.
Xi’an Famous Foods – 45 Bayard St
There is always a huge line at Xi’an Famous Foods and they finally expanded to a new, bigger location with more seats down the block. You can still get authentic Northern Chinese dishes like their delicious pulled noodles and lamb burgers here but you won’t be sitting shoulder to shoulder with your neighbors.
Nickel & Diner – 1 Howard St
With its slick but retro décor and a menu filled with comfort foods like fried chicken, burgers and chicken soup, Nickel & Diner is an interesting take on the modern diner. Nickel & Diner now serves all three meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Lanzhou Ramen – 107 East Broadway
We always love pulled noodles and another noodle shop just opened up on East Broadway. This is a bigger location than most similar noodle shops in the area. Their noodles are clearly the star but their steamed dumplings are delicious too!
The Bao Shoppe – 34 Canal St
Finally a new Taiwanese bao shop called The Bao Shoppe opened where Cafe de Nora used to be. With items like a philly cheesesteak wrap and mac & cheese spring rolls, you can definitely see there are some American influences here and this fusion of cuisine results in some delicious snack items!
