So whether you are flocking to the beaches or enjoying your second cup of ice cream, here are the top six ways to stay cool in New York City during the summer. Feel free to share your tips with us on Twitter or Facebook!
Get Some Ice Cream
Who can resist ice cream on a hot summer day? With everything from vanilla ice cream or something more unusual like lox ice cream, there are amazing ice cream shops throughout the city and there is something for everyone. Definitely check out our blog post of our favorite ice cream shops.
Go for a Swim
One of the best ways to take advantage of the summer heat and to stay cool at the same time is to go swimming at one of the many beaches and swimming pools in New York City like Coney Island, the Astoria Pool and the hotel rooftop pool at The Dream Hotel Downtown (355 W 16th St). Nothing feels better than when you first go into the water when you are hot!
Visit a Museum or Aquarium
During a heat wave, you may be looking to stay indoors and one fun thing to do is to visit some of the world class museums in New York City. Be sure to take a look at our guide to our must see museums and where to eat nearby. Similarly you can also check out the New York Aquarium (602 Surf Ave, Brooklyn) near Coney Island and see all the penguins, sea lions, otters and more! It is fun for the whole family.
Watch a Movie or Broadway Play
Another fun thing to do if you looking to stay indoors is to watch a movie or Broadway play. Movie theaters like the iPic Theater (11 Fulton St) near Pier 17 have been raising the bar with top notch food and incredibly cozy seats. Watching a new musical or Broadway play is a great way to get a break from the sun too.
Check out the Indoor Food Halls
In the last couple of years, there have been some amazing indoor food halls that have popped up in New York City. Some of must see food halls include Hudson Eats (200 Vesey St), Dekalb Market (445 Albee Square W, Brooklyn) and Gotham West Market (600 11th Ave). You can find a wide range of lunch, dinner and even dessert options and you can definitely pick up a cool refreshing drink like an iced coffee or lemonade here too.
Take Advantage of the Year Round Ice Skating Rinks
Finally one thing that is often overlooked in the summer months is that there are actually year round ice skating rinks in New York City. Our favorite year round ice skating rinks is the Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers (61 Chelsea Piers) and this is great idea that will keep your mind off the heat.
